Training Tips

Below you will find some basic training tips that will help you train yourself as well as your pup

Sit

Sit

Any hand motion that brings the head up and lowers the rear will work. The cupped hand is effective because it always suggests the possibility of a treat. This hand position will be used to reinforce “Come!” and “Leave it!.”

DO:

  • Lead your dog’s head up with a scooping motion.
  • Reward with praise every time, every sit.

DON’T:

  • Repeat command too much (“Sit Sit Sit SIT!”)
  • Use other words (“Sit down!”)
Down

Down

Stand fully upright with flat hand out, palm down.

For training, slowly lower hand past dog’s nose to floor.  A well-trained dog won’t need you to bend over.

DO:

  • Start in fully upright position.
  • Tap hand on floor to lead nose and body down.

DON’T:

  • “Yo-yo” hand up and down.
  • Begin bending down too quickly.
  • Use “Down!” command to correct other behaviors, such as jumping.
Stay

Stay

Fingers pointing down, palm facing dog.

Use a specific command such as “Release” or “All done” to let your dog know when they can move again.

For training, “model” behavior by keeping very still during “Stay!” Then leap into motion for “Release.”

A well-trained dog will stay while you turn your back, walk away, and do other activities.

DO:

  • Gradually add distance and activities.
  • Maintain “Stay!” while giving praise and/or treats.

DON’T:

  • Call out dog’s name (it’s confusing).
  • Say “Good dog” or “OK” to release.
Come

Come

Gesture toward body with scooping motion.

As your dog reaches you, rotate hand into “Sit!” position.

Touch your dog before rewarding.

A well- trained dog will sit close enough to be touched (caught!) every time.

DO:

  • Use happy, inviting tone, no matter what!
  • Always reward with exuberant praise.
  • Use a leash and/or a helper to ensure success.

DON’T:

  • Scold, no matter what!
  • Chase while calling! Your dog will run away!
  • Use other gestures (hand clapping, leg slapping)
  • Use other words (“Over here” or “Baby, Baby, etc.”)
